STEWART FAMILY

Stewart Genealogy

Wedding picture of David and Mary Ann Stewart

David H. Stewart and Mary Ann (Ferguson) Stewart, with seven children, came to America from Newton Stewart Scotland in 1877, settling in on a farm near Hartsburg, IL where David H. Stewart's sister had previously migrated.   Their name was McMath, and shown in the 1880 census film.    This census film can be obtained through your local library of Logan County, IL, which verifies the age of the D.H. Stewart family.   The name on the film is shown as Steward.

David H. and Mary Ann farmed between Lincoln and Hartsburg but due to high farm rental and maybe due to the lure of the west, moved to White City, KS in 1896.  during the 17 years spent in Illinois three more children were added to the family, making ten in all.   These were Maggy, Jeanne and Ella.   when the move was made to Kansas, James W, Mary, Andrew, Maggy, Jeanne and Ella moved with them.   The other four had married and remained in Illinois.

David H. and Mary Ann farmed near White City but after about six years they moved to Wakita, OK where James William, his wife, Sara Jane (Barley) and Andrew had previously moved.   Maggy and Jeanne had married and did not make the move to Oklahoma.   Wakita is located in the old Indian Territory opened to settlement in September 1893.   David H, Mary Ann and Ella operated a grocery store in Wakita until David H. passed away in 1906.   All three of them are buried in the cemetery at Wakita.  Note pictures attached.

The 1900 census film of Morris County, KS, White City section shows David H. owning the farm there.  This film shows Aunt Mary living away from home and her occupation as a dress maker but doesn't show where she lived.  I believe she lived in Alta Vista, KS as she married a Doctor Brickbill there.  They later moved to California where the doctor passed away.

About 1905 or 1906 John (Jack) Stewart, Naomi and three girls moved from Illinois to Wakita, OK where John operated a meat market.  He passed away and is buried in the Wakita cemetery.  Naomi passed away in Sulphur, OK and is buried there.  Also, Aunt Isabella and her husband Jesse Robinson, with two boys, Wayne and Merwin, moved from Illinois to Wakita.  Jesse was a barber.

In 1909, James W. and Sara with five children, Lawrence C. (me), David Harold, James Clifton, Norman Glen and Gertrude, moved to Palacios, TX where my family all grew up.   James W. operated a furniture store in Palacios for many years.   If you are wondering why I'm in Oklahoma, it is because I got married here, Enid, after finishing school in Palacios.   I went to Colorado to spend the summer with Uncle Andrew at Keensburg then on my return to Palacios I stopped over in Wakita where we had previously lived, got a job there for a short time then to Enid with the Long BellLumber Co., then to a small oil marketing company and later on to the Marland Refining Co. in Ponca City, OK in June 1923.   In 1927 Marland and the Continental Oil Co. (Conoco) merged.   I then was given a job as a field auditor where I remained for 35 years, retiring January 1, 1959.  Now you all know that I'm a little old.  I'm enjoying life though.   After retiring I purchased some wood working tools and have enjoyed building furniture etc.  I also build reproductions of the Eli Terry wall clock.  I've made 12 so far.

I'm sure there will be many questions about all this, so let me know and I'll do my best to help you out.  I'm attaching a list of all the family still living and I think it would be nice for you all to get in touch with one another.
